The unknown territories of the Egyptian Sahara

To the west of the Dakhla and Kharga oasis there is an impenetrable territory called “The Great Sand Sea”, a vast zone of sand dunes aligned North-South which covers around 1/5 of Egyptian territory. This is the region where, according to Herodote, an entire Persian army vanished in the 6th century B.C. The teams of Rudolph Kuper from the Cologne University trekked through the area and discovered prehistoric encampments. At present, no prehistorians have yet ventured into the Great Sea of Sand to verify whether there was a prehistoric occupation. Further to the South stretches the Gilf el-Kébir, a vast rocky territory home to decorated grottos, the most spectacular of which are Wadi Sora I and II. South beyond the plateau rises the Jebel Ouweinat, frequently inhabited, with temporary encampments and decorated grottos from a period when the Sahara was much more moist (before 4000 B.C.)
